Antique apothecary
furniture,
elegant shelves aged by numerous recipes, ladened with large white
porcelain jars housing exotic and mysterious contents with curative
powers that perfume the air......we all have a pharmacist in our memory...
the chemist always had white hair, white like his coat, and the
insignia, the corporate cross, caduceus and snake, the same as on the
sign...as on the doctor´s prescription. Observing pensively ¨..come
back in 3three days¨..he would say, because the preparation had to
be weighed out on the scale....the chemicals would have to be dosed
and mixed by grams and milligrams according to the chemists wisdom....
and you imagined the pharmacist... crushing ingredients with
the mortar and pestle, surrounded by distilling apparatus, test tubes
and measuring implements, he lay somewhere between the alchemist and
learned monk who consulted recipes in ancient Gothic manuscripts.....and
today, when you can´t find a brand name prescription, and the
pharmacist gives you something generic, chosen by him, you are surprised.....
todays´ pharmacies are well lit, furnished with modern
materials and miles of happy colors that smile from boxes and bottles
containing pills and capsules even more colorful, but then there is
the coat, with the insignia with the cross and the sign outside...we
are reminded, this is a pharmacy...
todays´ and yesterdays´ chemists are the only ones
who are still able to read mysterious manuscripts. When one writes illegibly
they say ¨you have doctors´ handwriting..¨ a legend claims
that a doctor, unable to read his own handwriting went to the pharmacist
and said ¨excuse me, what´s written here? And the alchemist
magically deciphered the text...
One day a pharmacist told me: ¨even today in every pharmacy
there is still a chemist who knows how to prepare the needed recipe..the
scale is still there, the medications are still weighed out and prepared,
not very often, but still..¨ after a silent pause his chest swelled
with professional pride and the corporate cross began to beat in his
heart..
¨what i mean is¨
the doctors...they should diagnose and prescribe the remedy..but the
correct medication should be chosen by us, we know what they contain,
thier composition, their function, their indications and the effects
they produce...¨
of course..!¨
ït´s the same pharmacist... behind the counter, working
with the scale in the store or the industrial laboratory, the knowledge,
the ability and the preparations are always the same...
the doctor diagnoses the illness and the pharmacist prepares
the medication, but between them, in the filling of the prescription,
lies the marriage between their wisdom, the common ground of their knowledge
is the testimony of the sharing of experience between the two as they
fight against disease, both doctors, both in coats..
